Fallout 4: Bethesda advises PC gamers to refrain from using console commands

Game Athen: If you’re using console commands with the PC version of Fallout 4 you do so at your own risk.

Fallout 4: Bethesda advises PC gamers to refrain from using console commands

Bethesda has said that it does not support the use of console commands on the PC version of Fallout 4.

Speaking via Twitter, VP of marketing Pete Hines said using console commands could screw up your game save. And there’s no chance such commands will come to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

This weekend’s indie darling is the adorable but hardcore Hollow Knight

Game Athen: Hollow Knight is a hardcore sidescrolling action game from a small indie team, and everyone’s pretty interested in it as of the latest trailer.

This weekend’s indie darling is the adorable but hardcore Hollow Knight

“But Brenna,” you may say. “The world is full of indie Metroidvania games! There’s even one called ‘Shovel Knight’ occupying this niche. Why should I care?”

I’m certain there’s an argument about never having enough of this genre, but rather than attempt to make it, I’ll just show you the beautiful trailer that has people so excited. I may also drop the word “hardcore” and point out that the title rings a few Dark Souls bells.

Crowdfunded last year, Hollow Knight is coming to Linux, Mac, PC and Wii U in 2016. Developer Team Cherry is based in the very best city in the whole world.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 Free To Play in Australian

Game Athen: Venerable football series Pro Evolution Soccer may be making the leap to free-to-play.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 Free To Play in Australian

PES fans take note: the Australian Classification Board appears to have outed something pretty interesting.

A new title called Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 Free to Play has popped up on the board’s database, having been awarded a G rating.

The listing doesn’t give any platform information, unfortunately – not even the “multi platform” descriptor which is usually applied. We can pretty safely assume this will be a digital-only release, obviously.

We’ve contacted Konami’s Australian distributor, which makes its Classification applications, and will report back with any information received.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 launched on PC, PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 in September. The series has a staunch fanbase but is regularly outsold by rival FIFA.

'Outlook NOT Good' for Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth on Vita, Wii U and New 3DS

Game Athen: The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth may not make it to three target platforms.

'Outlook NOT Good' for Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth on Vita, Wii U and New 3DS

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth is an expansion to Nicalis and Edmund McMillen’s fancy re-release, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

Released on October 30, the add-on has gone down pretty well with fans on Steam (apart from a ruckus over whether bugs were part of an AR game or not). The DLC is also on the way to PS4 and Xbox One, but other systems are looking pretty chancy at the moment, according to Nicalis producer Tyrone Rodriguez.

Nintendo Opens EBay Store, Celebrates Super Famicom's 25th Anniversary

Game Athen: Nintendo has a new way to sell its refurbished hardware.

Nintendo Opens EBay Store, Celebrates Super Famicom's 25th Anniversary

A few years back Nintendo of America began selling refurbished consoles through its web store.

Grabbing one of these pre-loved consoles is a great way to save a few bucks on your console purchase and still score a warranty, but it looks like Nintendo is hoping to make the offer more widely known and available by opening an official Nintendo eBay frontage.

It makes a lot of sense; if you’re looking to pick up a cheap or second-hand console, you’re more likely to search eBay than the Nintendo website. If you’re a Ninty fan, it’s probably worthwhile bookmarking and coming back if you need some replacement hardware. There are plenty of brand-new items on sale, too.

Payday 2 studio apologises over added microtransactions

Game Athen: PayDay 2 developer Overkill Software has reached out to its most loyal fans, apologising for a rough few weeks.

Payday 2 studio apologises over added microtransactions

PayDay fans have been in an uproar ever since the Black Market update introduced game balance-altering microtransaction items. Although Overkill later made changes ensuring the content could be accessed for free, the new system provoked a furious reaction.

Although Overkill said that the Black Market content was working out financially, suggesting lots of players didn’t mind the addition, things have been pretty uncomfortable on the co-op shooter’s Steam Community page and subReddit.

In an attempt to put an end to the drama, Overkill has extended an olive branch, offering an apology for recent events and vowing to improve.

“The past few weeks have been some of the most challenging in the history of this community,” producer Almir Listo wrote on PayDay 2’s Steam Community page.

“Players have been angry with us, media have written about us en masse and our volunteer moderators went on strike. For all the distress we’ve caused the past few weeks, I’d just like to take the time and say that we’re sorry. We’ve done a lot of things right in the past, but these past few weeks we screwed up.”

Listo then said Overkill is going to do its best to improve “at many things” as soon as possible.

The developer has done more than just offer a statement; it agreed to a two hour discussion with volunteer moderators to go over community feedback, which you can watch in the video below.

Overkill has also arranged meetings with prominent members of the modding community, as well as a representative from the Russian player base, and will even be covering travel costs to bring some modders to its offices in Stockholm.

Elsewhwre in the post, Listo provided multiple updates fans have been asking for, on the console builds of PayDay 2, new voice work on its way to the game, and Overkill’s plants to make PayDay 2 a tournament game.

Moving forward, Overkill intends to be more communicative. Eight Overkill developers will actively participate in forum discussions rather than merely observing passively.

“We will let you know more information as discussions continue regarding many of the issues we intend to improve on,” Listo said.

“We will be reading our public Steam forums closely for feedback and we will be engaging in community discussions as much as we possibly can.”

Let’s hope Overkill’s efforts at communication will help find solutions that satisfy its development goals and mollify its hardcore fanbase. It’s a shame to see veteran players walk away from a game they loved.

XCOM 2's wilderness areas look nice and varied

Game Athen: February 5! Have you marked that date on your calender? Why not? OK then, buy a calendar. No, it doesn't matter which one...yep, that one with the funny cats is just fine. Now write 'XCOM 2 is out!', and underline it three times—also remember to make a note of your Nan's birthday. XCOM 2 is out February 5, which is ages away, but to satiate your turn-based hunger in the meantime, Firaxis and 2K have released a bunch of new images.

XCOM 2's wilderness areas look nice and varied

Last week, they showed off the gleaming Advent cities, and this week they're showing off XCOM 2's wilderness environments, which vary from woodland areas to frosty scrubland and deserty bits. Can't you just see yourself taking cover behind that car, taking the occasional potshot at some hissing, slithery alien?

Also: "The Wilderness maps not only provide us with a different backdrop from the iconography and propaganda of ADVENT territory but, in many situations, more open and clear lines of sight during engagement. Keep in mind this won’t be the case during every Wilderness encounter though, as the forests and rundown buildings are still prime locations for an ambush from a waiting ADVENT patrol."
