Game Athen: Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows has been graced with a release date: September 17.

Shovel Knight expansion Plague of Shadows is just one week away

The totally free expansion casts players in the role of Plague Knight for a whole new campaign – but also adds a ton of new features including alchemy and the long awaited Challenge Mode.

You need to have finished the core story of Shovel Knight to start up Plague of Shadows, but Yacht Club Games has promised to provide a code that’ll drop you right down at the start of the new content if you’ve changed platforms or lost your save file somehow.

Plague Knight plays a little differently to Shovel Knight, but Yacht Club has provided a stack of information on the new character to help you come to grips with our new masked friend.

Shovel Knight is available on 3DS, Linux, Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Vita, Wii U and Xbox One. A physical version will release next month.

Halo 5 won’t include voting or veto on multiplayer maps

Game Athen: Halo 5 is in charge of map rotation, and you will like it or lump it.

Halo 5 won’t include voting or veto on multiplayer maps

Halo 5 Guardians won’t allow players to vote on or veto upcoming maps when participating in multiplayer playlists.

The news comes direct from 343 Industries studio head Josh Holmes, responding to a question on Twitter.

It’s kind of interesting to see this fairly standard feature being passed over in so many games – Destiny doesn’t have it either, for example. What’s the deal?

On the one hand it’s annoying to have to play a map you dislike, and I feel like map voting gives designers an idea of what’s working and what’s not. On the other hand it can be super boring playing the same map over and over again because your matchmade opponents only like the one. Swings and roundabouts.

Halo 5 launches exclusively for Xbox One on October 27.

Knoxville As Press Play's Next Project

Game Athen: Last month Max: The Curse of Brotherhood developer Press Play let people vote on which game it would make next. The results are in: it's making Project: Knoxville.

Knoxville is a third-person multiplayer action game inspired by movies The Running Man and The Hunger Games. (I hope it's more The Running Man than The Hunger Games, but then, I am old.)

Microsoft, which owns Press Play, said the studio is working on putting the Knoxville prototype into a shareable state.

Blizzard has released two videos showcasing one of Heroes of the Storm's upcoming characters, Rexxar

Game Athen: Heroes of the Storm is stepping away from the Diablo event as of today, and is focusing more on Warcraft and Starcraft in the coming months. The Treasure Goblins are out, and Rexxar, the half-orc half-ogre is in, with his partner Misha the bear (albeit with some launch issues for some).

Rexxar is a warrior, so it's important to note outright that he's going to be a bit more tanky than you'd expect, and doesn't pack as much of a punch as an assassin. As a ranged character with a semi-microable pet, he's a very good choice for newcomers, as he isn't nearly as complicated as The Lost Vikings or Abathur. Think of Misha as more of an extension of Rexxar, and less of its own entity.

From both an aesthetic and gameplay perspective, I really like how Misha is designed. She's always with you, and can run in even if you're still mounted -- so she doesn't feel like a tacked-on summon. Additionally, she's surprisingly aggressive for an AI, and I've seen her chase down enemies for a full 30 seconds. I also love her versatility, in that I can basically sacrifice her for a dive kill or to save my own skin, or even take camps by myself early game. If Misha dies, she'll simply respawn (at first, within 14 seconds, with a more lengthy timer as the game goes on). It's important to just note callously throw Misha to the wolves, as she does count as one fourth of a kill. It seems like, for now, that she can take objectives, which is interesting.

Your actual abilities as Rexxar involve a Q line skillshot that slows enemies, a W that sends Misha forward to stun foes in a line, and an E that heals his pet. As you can probably tell with a slow and a stun (as well as any number of modifications as you level), Rexxar is very handy at chasing down foes, locking down healers, and running away, despite the fact that he himself doesn't have a real escape. While his passive (the power to call Misha by his side or have her act offensively) and E aren't all that exciting, the auto-attacks from his pet ensure that he rarely runs low on mana. As long as he's being healed, he rarely every needs to go back to base.

As for his ultimate, you can take Bestial Wrath (a temporary buff for Misha) or Unleash the Boars (a short range homing attack that reveals and slows for five seconds), but I have a feeling that the former is going to be the most popular because it's straight-forward, and highly effective. Like Johanna's Blessed Shield, the boars are mostly situational and will require more coordination than a typical Quick Match allows.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with Rexxar and what he's capable of, provided that you have the damage on your team to take advantage of his slows, stuns, and great initiation. It's exciting that Blizzard is bringing a more streamlined pet class into the game, as most of the micromanaging is off-putting to new players. While I would love a fully autonomous Misha personally, I can deal with this.

Payday 2 is getting medieval weapons courtesy of Chivalry

Game Athen: Weapons from Torn Banner Studios’ Chivalry: Medieval Warfare are coming to cooperative first-person shooter Payday 2 in a DLC titled Gage Chivalry Pack through a collaboration between both games’ development studios.

The Gage Chivalry Pack will be available on Sept. 10 for $5 on Steam. The premise behind the DLC is that Gage has managed to intercept the medieval weapons as they were being transported from one museum to another.

The items included in the DLC are:
3 Chivalry ranged weapons
1 Chivalry throwing weapon
4 Chivalry melee weapons
4 Chivalry masks
4 achievements
4 Chivalry patterns
4 Chivalry materials

Sept. 10 marks the release date of “Day 1” of the Gage Chivalry Pack, but Overkill Software’s official website for the DLC teases “Day 2” as “coming soon.”

Last month, Overkill Software released the Yakuza Character Pack, which added a new playable character voiced by Togo Igawa.

Payday 2 was released in 2013 on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, an updated version for current generation consoles developed by Starbreeze Studios, was released this past June for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, resulting in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions no longer being supported by the developer, which cited hardware limitations as reason for this decision. There has been no word on if the Cage Chivalry Pack will be made available to PS4 and Xbox One players.

Star Wars Battlefront players can battle it out for control of supply drops in the newly-detailed Drop Zone mode

Game Athen: Star Wars Battlefront has a King of the Hill-style mode that can be played on planets such as Tatooine, Hoth, Sullust and Endor.

Star Wars Battlefront players can battle it out for control of supply drops in the newly-detailed Drop Zone mode

Drop Zone sees "tight" eight versus eight matches where Rebel and Empire teams fight to capture and control drop pods that fall through the atmosphere onto planet surfaces.
1

EA has yet to release gameplay footage of Dropzone, but we do have the screenshot, right, that offers a glimpse of what it looks like.

Like in most King of the Hill modes, Drop Zone tasks players with triggering a short Drop Zone claim process. Your team wins if it captures five pods, or controls the majority of them after the 10-minute match is up.

EA said if a pod is constantly changing possession, with no team able to defend it long enough to claim it, another pod will be sent down to give the teams two pods to fight over and, hopefully, break the stalemate.

Captured pods need to be defended, but you'll want to be quick on your feet to avoid being hit by explosives or an Orbital Strike.

"This goes hand in hand with our design philosophy behind many of the game modes in Star Wars Battlefront," lead level designer Dennis Brännvall said.

"We're promoting the idea of a fast, action-packed game where you need to be mobile and think on your feet. Camping doesn't really pay off."

Claimed pods begin to open, revealing Power Pickups. There's a risk reward mechanic here, because it takes a moment for the pod to open, so sticking around for the Power Pickup is dangerous. Plus, when your claimed pod is opening up, another pod will hit the surface elsewhere, so it may be better to ditch the reward and head to the new pod instead.

As for tactics, you'll want to use Droids and Turrets to create makeshift defenses. A Turret defends an area, while a Viper Droid outlines where enemies are coming from.

Brännvall added that each map has been created to support Drop Zone. The Swamp Crash Site on Endor, for example, sees the fight take place around a crashed GR-75 transport ship with containers from the craft strewn across the landscape. One section has a waterfall overlooked by an Ewok village. Here, you have to jump down into the pool below to claim the pod.

Drop Zone is included in the Star Wars Battlefront beta, due out on PC via Origin, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in early October. The beta also includes the 40-player Walker Assault on Hoth, and the wave-based Survival Mission on Tatooine.

Konami has issued a warning to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain players regarding a bug that could corrupt save files

Game Athen: As explained on the company's website, this bug can be triggered if you have Quiet as a buddy character while playing Mission 29 or Mission 42.

Konami has issued a warning to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain players regarding a bug that could corrupt save files

To avoid a potential headache, Konami recommends that you simply do not use Quiet as a buddy during those missions. The bug is affecting all platforms, and a Konami community manager says on Twitter that the company is currently working to determine the cause, after which it can develop a fix.

"We deeply apologize, and appreciate your patience for further announcements regarding this issue," Konami said.

We'll update this post with more details as they become available.

Although The Phantom Pain received glowing praise upon release on September 1, the game's launch was marred somewhat by servers issues that lasted days. These problems, which affected the game's Forward Operating Base multiplayer mode, have now been largely fixed.

The Phantom Pain will continue to grow next month in the area of multiplayer, as that's when Konami plans to release the game's more traditional, head-to-head multiplayer mode, Metal Gear Online for consoles. This multiplayer offering is coming in January 2016 for PC.

Earlier this year, Konami announced that it had started development on a new Metal Gear Solid game and was actively recruiting for the project. Meanwhile, series creator Hideo Kojima is expected to exit Konami, according to GameSpot's sources.

Activision sending some old-gen Destiny players 32 GB USB drives to install game onto

Game Athen: Activision and Bungie have found a way to help Destiny players who are still on last-gen consoles and can’t afford a hard drive upgrade.

Activision sending some old-gen Destiny players 32 GB USB drives to install game onto

Bungie recently confirmed the space requirements you’ll need to have on your consoles if you want to play The Taken King. The numbers shouldn’t be much of an issue for the vast majority of PS4 and Xbox One owners. A lot of PS3 and Xbox 360 players however will suffer, and that’s because some models come with very limited hard drive space.

In an attempt to not leave those players behind, Activision said those with “existing and active” accounts on last-gen consoles who also own the 20 GB versions of these consoles can contact the publisher for a solution.

That solution has been revealed today to be a 32 GB flash drive. Gamespot reports one of its readers was the recipient of the drive after he contacted the publisher.

However, as the site notes, game files still need to be installed onto the internal hard drive. So you could either use this to store other game files on, or you could wait for an upcoming Destiny patch that will make it possible to install game files on an external drive.

If you’re in the same boat, you can contact Activision support to see if they can send you one. Do note however the offer may not be available in all countries.

Kingdom Hearts 2.9 leaked, in development for PS3 and PS4

Game Athen: The LinkedIn page for a Square Enix employee has leaked the existence of Kingdom Hearts 2.9 for the PS3 and PS4, as well as previously unknown information about Kingdom Hearts 3.

Kingdom Hearts 2.9 leaked, in development for PS3 and PS4

Kingdom Hearts 2.9 leaked, in development for PS3 and PS4 2

The employee, who was a Director and Designer in Japan, worked for Square Enix until June 2015. Before that, he worked for Capcom on games like Resident Evil 6. You can only see his LinkedIn profile if you log in, so here’s a handy screenshot I took.

Right up until he left, he was working on Kingdom Hearts 2.9, which is more than likely another re-release of previous games in the Kingdom Hearts series. The series hasn’t seen a release on PS4 yet, so it makes sense for there to be one in the run-up to KH3. The name itself is kind of taking the piss though. Look forward to the inevitable Kingdom Hearts 2.1473672 coming Summer 2020!

What he was doing as part of the development team for Kingdom Hearts 3 is also listed in great detail. The biggest additions are “Multiplayer planning and documentation”, and holding meetings with Disney and Pixar. Pixar has never been featured in a Kingdom Hearts game despite being owned wholly by Disney for a decade now. Kingdom Hearts 3 seems like the perfect time to introduce them.

So, multiplayer Kingdom Hearts with a Monsters Inc world sound good to anyone else? I bet we'll hear more about Kingdom Hearts 2.9 at the Tokyo Game Show this month.

Star Wars Battlefront newly-detailed Drop Zone mode

Game Athen: Star Wars Battlefront has a bunch of different modes, many of which seem to present twists and tweaks on established multiplayer formulae.

Star Wars Battlefront newly-detailed Drop Zone mode

The latest to be detailed is Drop Zone, an 8v8 mode which DICE describes as a king of the hill-style experience.

Players fight for Rebel or Empire control of pods that drop from orbit, and win either by capturing five pods or by holding the majority of them when the match timer ends. If a stalemate occurs, a new pod will be added to the field, diverting the action.

Once claimed, pods will begin opening, and if held long enough will provide Power Pickups – but if a pod opens, another will drop.

“Playing Drop Zone on the Swamp Crash Site on Endor is a personal favorite. The map has a couple of nice choke points but is overall very free-flowing and hectic, as enemies can attack from anywhere on that level,” says Brännvall. “The fight takes place around a crashed GR-75 transport ship with containers from the craft strewn across the landscape, and there’s one section with a waterfall overlooked by an Ewok village, where you have to jump down into the pool below in order to claim the pod, hoping no one’s hiding in the trees above waiting to pick you off.”

"We hope you’ll enjoy exploring all these ins and outs of Drop Zone - and of course all the other game modes - when Star Wars Battlefront lands November 17th. Keep an eye on the sky."

Six games have sold over 1m copies on Steam in 2015

Game Athen: While Steam Spy is an "imperfect tool" by its own creator's admission, it's still a decent way to get broad strokes data on what's doing well on Steam. Creator Sergey Galyonkin recently pointed out the top six games released in 2015 on the platform thus far, and while the results aren't all that surprising, it's nice to have suspicions corroborated by stats.

Six games have sold over 1m copies on Steam in 2015

GTA V, ARK: Survival Evolved, H1Z1, Cities: Skylines, Rocket League and Besieged have all sold over 1 million units since March 2015, the stats show. They're not the most newly owned games of the year – that distinction goes to Killing Floor 2, which has unreliable data thanks to a recent free weekend – but they're the ones that have sold most and have never been given away.

When you include games that have been given away, in addition to free-to-play games, the stats are very different. Evolve, H-Hour: World's Elite and Trove are among the most 'owned' games, though that doesn't necessarily mean a bunch of people play them: the mean playing time of H-Hour, for example, is just over four minutes, meaning a lot of people weren't drawn in by first impressions.

The Witcher 3 might be higher on the list if it weren't primarily a GOG title. Nonetheless it's sold more than 500,000 units, and so has Dying Light, Stranded Deep, Killing Floor 2, Total War: Attila and Pillars of Eternity.

How to make GMP quickly in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Game Athen:Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain – how to make GMP quickly

How to make GMP quickly in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Making GMP in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain isn’t super hard, as long as you’re willing to put in a bit of groundwork. With plenty of GMP on hand, you can quickly upgrade your equipment and customise your approach to the battlefield – resulting in potentially higher ratings, more discovered resources, and a generally good time. Here are our top tips for raking in the cash.

Achieve S-Rank on story missions

Managing to score an S rating on a Story Mission nets you a whopping 20% GMP bonus. That’s well worth the effort it takes to achieve, especially as getting those elusive S Rank mission end screens may not be as hard as you think it is.

The best way to improve your rating on any given missions is to focus on speed and stealth – ghosting a mission in record time will push your rating up considerably. Learn patrol routes and make a speed run dash for the goal without being detected.

Otherwise, you can earn higher scores by not using Reflex Mode, landing headshots (with a non-lethal weapon, of course; we’re ghosting) and interrogating baddies.

Do Side Ops

This should be obvious, but doing non-essential missions will earn you more rewards for use in prepping yourself for the main story missions. There are 150 Side Ops missions and all of them offer a GMP reward.

The payout varies depending on difficulty and mission details, but whether you’re extracting prisoners or clearing mines, you can expect later Side Ops to bring in a tasty 300,000 GMP.

You’re also missing out on a huge chunk of interesting content if you skip Side Ops, so make the effort.

Collect Rough Diamonds

One of the easiest ways to make money, if not the most reliable, are Rough Diamonds. Pick up any you see – the value of these low-effort collectibles ranges up to 100,000 GMP.

In addition to Rough Diamonds found scattered throughout missions and the general field, you can secure a good supply by interrogating enemy soldiers. It’s really worthwhile mining these guys for information, isn’t it? Ah ha ha.

No seriously: collect the damn rocks. It’s one of the most efficient ways to get yourself cashed up as you pursue other goals.

Send your staff out on Combat Deployments

Why should Snake do all the work? You’ve spent all this time assembling a crack team, so send them out into the field to pay back the cash you spent Fultoning their asses back to Mother Base. You can send two soldiers on missions to begin with, and can unlock the ability to deploy more by constructing Forward Operating Bases.

Note that there is an element of risk with this one – your soldiers can be killed on missions. The best way to avoid this is to send your best troops on missions with high success rate projections.

Although it takes some work to get your team together, this method is one of the most low-effort and efficient methods of raking in GMP we’ve found so far. Just get on with your life while others make money for you. What’s not to love?

Destiny will not host its regular Daily and Weekly events this coming week

Game Athen: Destiny: The Taken King is just over one week away, which means the shared-worlds shooter is going into preparation mode ahead of the big launch.

Destiny will not host its regular Daily and Weekly events this coming week

As part of these preparations, Bungie has announced that there will be no Daily Heroic missions, Weekly Heroic Strike or Nightfall Strike for the week of September 8 through September 14. We had a similar downtime ahead of House of Wolves earlier this year, so it’s not unexpected.

There’s some compensation, though; the Destiny 2.0 update arrives on September 8, when we’d normally expect the weekly update to drop, and brings with it a huge stack of changes to explore, as well as a PvP preview week for those who fancy the new Crucible content.

Daily and Weekly activities will resume when The Taken King launches on September 15. However, as you may recall, it brings changes: Dailies will be account-bound, so you only have to do them once, and there’ll be no more Weekly Heroic – the Vanguard Heroic Strike playlist will replace it. Don’t worry though, there’ll still be plenty of ways to earn Strange Coins.

New The Witcher 3 Patch to Expand Romance Dialogue

Game Athen: If you were disappointed by how Geralt’s love life played out in The Witcher 3, an upcoming patch may address your issues.

New The 3 Witcher Patch to Expand Romance Dialogue

(Note: some very mild spoilers for The Witcher 3 follow, so turn back if you don’t want to read about the game’s two main romantic interests).

Kotaku’s Kirk Hamilton has followed up on CD Projekt Red’s promise to tweak some of the romantic dialogue in the games. Fans have reported some dissatisfaction with how things play out if they choose Triss over Yennefer, with the former providing far fewer options for conversation than the latter once the pair are together.

According to the response CD Project Red sent Hamilton, the writers are “adding some extra conversational options” for both relationships, which will hopefully make the game’s romances more satisfying.

■ Interview Tidbits

The following are tidbits from the interview in this week’s Weekly Famitsu:

Since there are a lot of players that have an interest in the world of Monster Hunter, we were looking into a game in the the RPG genre that takes advantage of the setting for about five or six years. Actual development started two years ago.
There are a lot of people who love monsters, so for this game we put the spotlight on monsters.
I want players of all ages to play this game. We made the visuals and world setting as familiar as possible, and we’re aware the story is not too serious.
The “Power,” “Technique,” and “Speed” command-based battles are not only games of luck. For example, the Velociprey likes to speed, etc. There are different habits for each monster. By continuously getting into battle, you’ll learn their habits.
The hero can have a party with multiple monsters. In a battle, he can fight together with one of them. It’s also possible to change which monster you are partnered with in battle.
The hero participates in battle but largely in a support role. The core attacks are dished out by the Otomon.
Otomon have their own particular abilities, and there are cases when you can go places you normally can’t by making use of them.
New areas previously not seen in the series will be depicted in this game.
Riders form bonds with monsters, while Hunters hunt monsters. From the perspective of these opposing groups, the game will depict a deep story about the world of Monster Hunter.

There’s a really easy way to beat Quiet in MGS V: The Phantom Pain

Game Athen: Most people who’ve been following Metal Gear Solid V probably know about Quiet. Even if you have no interest in playing the game, it’s been hard to miss the boobed-out bikini warrior with the sniper rifle who’s been featured so prominantly in the game’s promotion.
Minor spoilers from the first part of MGSV follow!

There’s a really easy way to beat Quiet in MGS V: The Phantom Pain

Quiet is a sniper you can recruit to join you as a “buddy” in the field. She’s very useful in some situations, particularly if you’re taking on tough enemies that you can’t fight directly. There’s a snag, though, because of course there is: To recruit Quiet, first you’ll have to defeat her in battle. It’s the coolest encounter I’ve come across in the game so far.

After you finish a few early side ops, you’ll start to hear Kaz or Ocelot talking about an elusive lady sniper who’s been spotted around Afghanistan killing Russian officers. Once you take a side op that leads you toward the power plant in the northern part of the map (for me it was the stun arm blueprint), you’ll run into Quiet at the ruins en route to the plant. One minute you were heading for a routine side op, the next minute a cutscene is playing and you’re squaring off against Quiet. Neat.

The fight is cool, but it can be tricky. I knew I wanted to take Quiet alive, but didn’t have a nonlethal sniper rifle. Every time I managed to get a bead on her, I then had to close the distance with my tranquilizer pistol and try to get near enough to get off a shot or two before she ran away. It was fun! But hard.

I could pretty easily have taken her out with my sniper rifle, but I was worried that if I did that, I’d kill her and wouldn’t be able to recruit her. (I’ve since learned that’s not the case—you can “kill” her with a regular gun and you’ll still get a choice as to whether to spare her life and recruit her.)

For about 40 minutes, Quiet and I squared off. I got very good at tracking her, watching the dust she kicked up as she ran and listening for her telltale hum. It was a good tutorial for dealing with snipers more generally—I learned how to manage her field of vision and how to predict her shots so that even if she spotted me, she’d miss. But I just couldn’t close with her, no matter how careful I was.

I was running low on ammo, so I called in a supply drop. I set the drop to fall on my position and went into my iDroid to check in on Mother Base. Suddenly… BOOM! My supply drop landed directly on my head, knocking me over.

Like Newton sitting under the apple tree, I had an idea. An idea... that could change the course of human history.

Okay, or maybe it was just an idea on how to beat a boss in a video game. Anyway. I waited until Quiet set up on a new vantage point. I tagged her with my binoculars so that she’d turn up on my map. And then I called in a supply drop directly on top of her.

AND IT TOTALLY WORKED. I couldn’t fucking believe it. The box dropped right on her head. Half of her grey stamina bar was gone in an instant. I waited until she got set again and called in another airdrop. It worked again! Her stamina dropped to zero. Game over. I couldn’t stop laughing.

After the fight, I looked around online and found that the supply-drop tactic is already a semi-known way to defeat Quiet. I also learned that you can just shoot her with regular bullets and still recruit her—if I’d known that, it would’ve saved me some time!

I’m not sure I’d recommend that people use the supply drop trick to defeat Quiet straight away. The protracted standoff against her is extremely cool. But I love it when a game’s simulation is strong enough to let me pull off a trick like this.

There’s a really easy way to beat Quiet in MGS V: The Phantom Pain 2

I was faced with a problem. I had a weird idea. I tried it, and it worked perfectly. There may be no more satisfying feeling in video games.

Ron Gilbert would really like to make another Monkey Island

Game Athen: The Secret of Monkey Island released 25 years ago this month. A lot has happened since then: the internet now rules the world, you can send text messages to your fridge, and I've eaten more than 100 bacon and egg rolls. Ron Gilbert has commemorated the game's release over on his Grumpy Gamer blog (check out that beautiful Commodore 64 theme!) and while the whole thing is definitely worth a read, there was one quote that stands out from the rest.

Ron Gilbert would really like to make another Monkey Island

The quote concerns a possible future for the Monkey Island games. Gilbert doesn't own the rights to the Monkey Island IP – that ball is in Disney's court – but that doesn't mean he hasn't taken steps to be involved in the series' future.

"I don’t know if I will ever get to make another Monkey Island," Gilbert writes. "I always envisioned the game as a trilogy and I really hope I do, but I don’t know if it will ever happen. Monkey Island is now owned by Disney and they haven't shown any desire to sell me the IP. I don’t know if I could make Monkey Island 3a without complete control over what I was making and the only way to do that is to own it. Disney: Call me."

While we reported back in 2012 that Gilbert intended to contact Disney about Monkey Island, it looks like he has now, but with negative results. Whether there's a future for the series or not, you should definitely go and read Gilbert's whole blogpost, because in addition to some interesting insights into the game's development, there are some really beautiful fan letters.

Ten players conclusively prove that you can’t stop GTA Online’s train

Game Athen: Ten brave GTA Online players line up with their favorite cars in a tunnel. A train looms in the distance. Can they stop it?

Maybe not. But what happens in this clip by Redmar Belle instead is hilarious. Pure, sweet chaos. The very spirit of GTA, captured in a few seconds.

Ten players conclusively prove that you can’t stop GTA Online’s train

Probably not surprising, given that prior experiments to stop the train have failed—and people have tried just about everything to stop it, as this older clip by Metahelion shows:

Ten players conclusively prove that you can’t stop GTA Online’s train 2

Here we are, years after the original release of GTA V, still trying to stop the train. Still failing. Still having fun! That’s what matters.

Rocket League’s next patch irons out a few issues

Psyonix has outlined some of the changes and additions coming in the next patch for its hit soccer-with-cars game, Rocket League.
These details were shared over a series of tweets sent out by the official Rocket League Twitter account. Patch 1.05 appears to primarily deal with resolving nagging issues, but it also offers some new features, such as adding (at least) two new flags, the Chivalry: Medieval Warfare-themed ones pictured below. (Chivalry is also getting some Rocket League-themed stuff of its own.)

Rocket League’s next patch irons out a few issues

With the patch, players will be able to search for a new ranked match from the post-game screen. Currently, you have to exit back to the main menu (meaning you have to sit through a loading screen) in order to seek another match. Ranked play will also see its first proper season begin with the release of the update.

1.05 introduces a new interface for the music player, allowing you to rotate through Rocket League's music at will. You won't, however, be able to play music while inside of the game. That's because it's "a much bigger design/impact on the game question with heavy UI implications."

As for fixes, it's now less likely that your saves will be corrupted; usernames for PC players will no longer sometimes appear as asterisks to PS4 players; PC players can choose not to play with PS4 players (PS4 players already have this option for PC players); and text chat will no longer be broken after using suspend/resume on PS4.

1.05 does not yet have a release date, but it's due out "in two weeks or less." Once that's out, Psyonix will announce the next DLC, which will again include new vehicles.

Rocket League’s next patch irons out a few issues 2

Rocket League has proven to be tremendously popular since its release in July; it quickly surpassed 5 million downloads. Psyonix recently revealed the PC version alone has sold more than 1 million units, and it's now being given away for free to anyone who preorders a piece of Steam hardware.

New Need for Speed trailer highlights five ways to play

Game Athen: One of the main selling points of Ghost Games’ upcoming Need for Speed reboot is how much freedom it provides the player. It’s something I noticed when I demoed it at E3, and it’s of course, been talked about throughout quite a few promotional trailers.

Instead of making armchair racers play just one way, Need for Speed will actually allow for five different play styles. Outlined in a new trailer that was released today, they include the high-speed Racer, dangerous and cunning Outlaw, black thumbed Builder, team-focused Crew and outgoing Style categories. It’s up to you as to how you’ll play and which category you’ll eventually fall into, but it’ll no doubt be fun to experiment.
If this trailer seems familiar, that’s because it kind of is. Although it’s new, it covers almost the exact same ground that one of its predecessors did months ago. Still, it’s a relatively new look at what should be a very solid racing game.
Need for Speed (full-stop) will be released on November 3rd, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC (via Origin).

Street Fighter 5 Rainbow Mika Full V-Skill - nearly one-hit knockout

Street Fighter 5 Rainbow Mika's ability to deliver a nearly one-hit knockout in Capcom's upcoming fighting game. That may sound incredibly imbalanced, but actually pulling off that move will be nigh-impossible in a real-world scenario.

Rainbow Mika pulls out a microphone and gives a sixteen second monologue about training for strength, promising that anyone who follows her instructions will soon be “all muscle”. At the end of each step, she gains extra strength.

Street Fighter 5 is coming to PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in 2016.

It sounds like you’ll spend a lot of time attacking and boarding enemy ships, and exploring a huge open world, with over 50 ports to arrive at.

Arkane's Harvey Smith reveals the secrets hidden in Dishonored 2 trailer

The video Dishonored 2 trailer of co-creative director Harvey Smith explaining how elements of the trailer work in-game.

Vague reveal trailers with no gameplay footage are annoying. They're interesting, of course, and always welcome (they're announcing new games, after all), but their common lack of substantial information can really wear you down. The Dishonored 2 trailer Arkane delivered at E3 in June was among the better ones, in that actual information could be gleaned from it. Still, there's always the question: how much of this is just CG showponying, and how much of it is real?

The Dishonored sequel will continue the story of Emily Kaldwin. Players will have the choice of either playing as her or the original game’s protagonist, Corvo Attano.

Dishonored 2 is due for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during 2016.

The delightful platformer adventure featuring little folded paper in their little folded world will soon be taking a paper plane to a new platform. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming to the PS Vita

The Entertainment Software Rating Board rating has popped up for X-COM: Enemy Unknown Plus, which is being listed as a Mature game for the PlayStation Vita. It's important to note that the listing is for "Unknown," which is the base game, and not the "Within" expansion that was released in 2013.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming to the PS Vita

“This is a strategy game in which players must save present-day Earth from an alien invasion. As players manage resources, research weapon technology, and monitor alien presence, they can dispatch squads of soldiers to attack human- and insect-like creatures in turn-based combat. From a 3/4-top-down perspective, players use assault rifles, grenades, and other military-grade weapons to kill nearby enemies. Battles are accompanied by intermittent cutscenes that depict close-up (e.g., over-the-shoulder) instances of violence: soldiers getting impaled or beaten to death by alien creatures; realistic explosions that result in larger blood sprays. If an alien “implants” an egg into a dead human, the character will eventually explode amid additional gibbing effects. Some scenes depict dead or dying soldiers whose bodies are burned or mutilated. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” can be heard in the dialogue.”

XCOM: Enemy Unknown originally released in October 2012. A sequel, XCOM 2, is due in early 2016.

The new Halo 5: Guardians opening cinematic first look

Halo 5: Guardians excellent cinematic – this isn’t in-game footage, so it perhaps represents the absolute platonic ideal of Halo more than how Halo actually plays, but it’s still pretty great. Keith David is a treasure, too.

The new Halo 5: Guardians opening cinematic first look

When 343 Industries took over development of the Halo games in 2010, their first move was to reintroduce Master Chief as the main protagonist of the series. Halo 4 saw John-117 as the lead character for the first time since 2007, kicking off a new trilogy known as “The Reclaimer Saga.”

Continuing this trend, the next game 343 released was Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a compilation of all the Halo games that featured 117. Despite the game’s technical problems, the collection was applauded for providing such a comprehensive look at the character’s arc and exploits since Halo: Combat Evolved. Afterward, Master Chief was in perfect position to take the lead in the next installment of the franchise.

The opening cutscene hints at some incredible set pieces in the first mission alone, a fitting start to Halo 5‘s lengthy campaign. The story promises to incorporate the best part of the series’ extended universe, including aforementioned fan-favorite Edward Buck from Halo 3: ODST and Master Chief’s Blue Team, which was first introduced in Eric Nylund’s novel Halo: Fall of Reach. The game will be catering to the fans and while a single cutscene isn’t enough to judge the entirety of the story, the opening cinematic alone is enough to justify the excitement behind this latest entry in the Halo franchise.

Halo 5: Guardians launches on October 27th, 2015 on Xbox One.

Mortal Kombat X huge patch, “big news” coming next week

Right after Mortal Kombat X latest patch notes went out, Ed Boon teased “big news” on Twitter.

Mortal Kombat X huge patch, “big news” coming next week

The list of patch notes is available on WB Games’ community page. Going over the list is a good reminder of how Mortal Kombat has turned into a far more technical fighting series than it used to be. If you’re a seasoned fighter, notes promising that the developers “removed the ability to add extra inputs while doing a normal attack 2in1 cancel which allowed some characters to have the special move cancel only occur on hit / block” may mean more to you than to the rest of us.

Moments after tweeting out these patch notes, series co-creator Ed Boon hinted at something bigger on Twitter.

Mortal Kombat X huge patch is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
